Here's the news for avid gardeners in Manitoba.

Punch Up Your Containers
Plant Mounds in Your Shade
Totally Tempted Yet?
Dear Friend,

The planting of seeds is now underway here at Perennial Bliss, and spring activities have begun as hockey starts winding down.  For me it's a busy time.  I am thankful for the opportunity to sit down and 'chat' with you!

Before I get started, I need to share an article from Branchsmith Publishing regarding wooden planter boxes sold at Lowe's stores in Minnesota and across the U.S.  These wooden planters could be harboring the devastating emerald ash borer, a pest responsible for destroying millions of trees in the Midwest, the Duluth News-Tribune reported.  Minn. Dept. of Ag. is asking consumers to check for wooden planter boxes labeled Nature's Own Planters, manufactured in Indiana by Lawson Products.  The planters come from an area under federal quarantine for emerald ash borers. "We are asking people to either burn the planters or double-wrap them in 6-millimeter plastic bags and put them in the trash," said Geir Friisoe, plant protection division director for MDA, in a statement.

In doing the right thing for our environment, Perennial Bliss Garden Centre is prepared to offer a $5.00 gift certificate to anyone who must destroy these planters.  Simply bring the planters, double-wrapped in Glad garbage bags, to Perennial Bliss and tell me you want the $5.00 gift certificate. 'Why is Perennial Bliss doing this,' you ask? The emerald ash borer has not yet been found in Manitoba.  Currently no pesticides are registered for its control in Manitoba. Research has proven the pest can survive our extreme climate. Helping to control its spread is the only way to protect our numerous ash trees. Bring in your planters today for the $5.00 gift certificate and you can be on your way to buying some new planters! Maximum one certificate per person, please!

OK, enough of the serious issues surrounding the horticulture industry... this issue of Manitoba People and Plants is dedicated to showcasing the new introductions for 2008 at Perennial Bliss.  I hope it encourages and inspires you to try something new in your garden this year!

Sincerely,
Nancy Heide

Superbells Apricot Punch
Superbells Apricot PunchYou've heard of Supertunias® and Million Bells®, but you may not have heard of Superbells, a line of Calibrachoa from Proven Winners. Superbells Apricot Punch hybrid Calibrachoa takes an old favorite to a new level.

Developed and selected for their large flowers, their resistance to disease, and their strong summer performance, these Calibrachoa truly are Superbells. Their low, spreading form will give them a new stature when planted alone or in combinations. They're well-suited to containers, patios, or in the garden.

Mondo Grass Is For Shade
Black Mondo Grass is a super-stylish foliage plant with almost black leaves. Grow it along pavers or in front of white flowering plants for contrast.

A slow grower, it prefers to be planted in well-drained sandy or loamy soil in shade or part shade. Adding vermiculite to your heavy soil will give this plant the drainage it needs. Water and fertilize often, and voila... your friends will ask you how you got your designer garden!

Cuphea Totally Tempted
Cuphea Totally TemptedCuphea (pronounced coo-fee-aah) is soon to become a household word as Proven Winners has introduced another winner with 'Totally Tempted'. This is the 'Best New Plant For 2008' according to the January/Feburary issue of Gardening How-To. It is extremely heat and drought tolerant, which translates to 'easy to grow' in my world!

Its screaming crimson blooms would look great in your landscape or in containers. Try it! It can take the heat.

Food For Thought
Our last topic of discussion, 'Where is your garden headed? What are some of your gardening projects for 2008?' generated no responses so... I have to assume you are either too busy to plan them, or have no plans! That's about where I am too.  I will be doing some more landscaping work to beautify my outdoor spaces come summer, but so far I'm only planning layouts for other gardeners!

This brings me to another question... 'What expert (or not!) tips would you have for busy gardeners in Manitoba?' Click here to respond.  I would love to have your input and will post the results in the next issue of MPP.

Whether your yard has unrelenting hot sunny, comfortable partly sunny, or secluded shady spots, I hope you've found inspiration and something new to try.

Sincerely,

Nancy Heide
